GrayBeck

Legal — MatterOS

A case system where every fact cites its source.

MatterOS is GrayBeck's platform for plaintiff-side personal-injury firms. The whole matter lives on one versioned grid, every claim traces to the exact page it came from, and nothing releases without attorney review. It is not on the market yet — we are building it now with design partners.

MatterOS Matter Matrix: a cited, encounter-by-encounter medical chronology for a synthetic personal-injury matter, with every fact linked to its source document.

01The Matrix

One grid over the whole matter.

The core of MatterOS is the Matter Matrix: a spreadsheet-style analysis grid over a case. Each cell holds one finding — and each cell is versioned, carries its review state, and cites the evidence behind it down to the document, the page, and the exact span.

The matrix sits over the modules a plaintiff practice actually works in — timeline, people, medical, damages, issues, research, drafts, tasks. Attorneys, paralegals, medical reviewers, and invited experts work in the same record — every entry traceable, every change logged.

02The Modules

The surface a plaintiff practice actually works in.

The matrix is the grid; these are the columns of the case beneath it. Each module is built the same way — a versioned, cited record, not a folder of documents.

Timeline & events

Every event in the matter on one dated spine, each entry tied to the document that establishes it.

People & entities

Parties, witnesses, providers, carriers, and experts — their roles and relationships tracked as the matter develops.

Medical treatment

Providers, visits, and records organized so the medical story of an injury reads in order.

Damages

Economic and non-economic damages assembled from the record, each figure traceable to its source.

Issues

The legal and factual issues in play, with the findings and evidence that bear on each one.

Research & sources

Statutes, cases, and reference material, cited where the matter actually relies on them.

Drafts

Work product with full version history — every revision kept, nothing quietly overwritten.

Tasks & deadlines

Work and proposed deadlines surfaced from the matter; an attorney confirms what goes on the calendar.

Playbooks

How this firm works a matter, written down once and applied consistently across cases.

03Every Fact, Cited

If it is in the record, it has a citation.

Evidence enters MatterOS as documents with versions, broken into page-anchored segments. A fact exists in the system only as a claim tied to those segments — there is no floating assertion an attorney cannot check against its page.

Page-anchored citations.

Every fact points at a document version, a page, and a span. Checking a claim means opening its source, not searching for it.

Ethical walls in the database.

Cross-matter isolation and ethical walls are enforced at the database layer — row-level security, not an application checkbox.

An audit event on everything.

Every action in the system produces an audit event. The record of the case includes the record of how it was built.

04Humans Hold the Gate

Nine agents advise. Attorneys decide.

MatterOS runs nine governance agents over the matter. They check consistency across cells, verify citations, watch protocol, and test the coherence of the case as it develops. Their entire output is review items and recommendations.

That is all they can do. No agent in MatterOS can file a document, message a client, or release anything. Release authority is fail-closed by design: if an attorney has not approved a change, it does not move. Review queues keep an immutable history, so the file shows who approved what, and when.

We build it this way on purpose. A matter carries professional judgment and professional liability, and software that acts on its own inside one is a defect, not a feature.

05Built With Design Partners

Built inside a working firm.

MatterOS is being built the way GrayBeck builds everything: forward-deployed. A design partner is a firm whose real matters shape the product — our engineers sit with your attorneys and paralegals, watch how a case actually moves through the office, and build MatterOS around it. The audit discipline comes from our finance work, where systems we operate support $20B+ in portfolio assets on a 100% audit-ready history.

Here is where the product stands, stated plainly.

StatusRunnable vertical slice, on synthetic data. Not on the market; no production customers yet.
ArchitectureDefined: tenant isolation by row-level security, audit events on everything, usage metering, a contracts-first API.
PartnersOne founding design partner. Recruiting the next.
Built forPlaintiff-side personal-injury firms, roughly 1–50 attorneys — attorneys, paralegals, medical reviewers, and invited experts.

If you run a plaintiff practice and want the system shaped around how your firm actually works — before it hardens — this is the moment to talk.

Shape it before it ships.
